The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has introduced five free online courses in artificial intelligence (AI), specifically designed for individuals without any prior coding or programming background. These courses are being offered through the SWAYAM Plus platform, a government-supported initiative aimed at making quality digital education widely accessible.
Courses Designed for a Broad Audience
IIT Madras announced that these AI courses are interdisciplinary in nature and suitable for students and professionals across various fields, including science, engineering, commerce, and the arts. The programs are intended to make AI education more inclusive and beginner-friendly.
Each course involves a time commitment of 25 to 45 hours and features hands-on case studies and practical work with real-world datasets. Participants will explore how AI is applied in different domains, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Available Courses
The following five courses are currently offered:
- AI in Physics: Explores how machine learning and neural networks are used to solve problems in physics.
- AI in Chemistry: Teaches how AI models are used for molecular predictions and chemical analysis.
- AI in Accounting: Covers how automation and AI tools can be applied to finance and accounting processes.
- Cricket Analytics with AI: Introduces data-driven methods to evaluate player performance and match trends in cricket.
- AI/ML using Python: Offers foundational training in programming, machine learning, and data analysis using Python.
These courses are taught in English and include interactive components such as coding tasks and data interpretation exercises.
Academic Integration and Certification
The courses are aligned with the National Credit Framework (NCrF), making them suitable for integration into formal education programs as skill-based electives. Students can opt for a certificate by paying a fee, while access to course materials remains completely free.
In line with the National Education Policy 2020, which encourages interdisciplinary and practical learning, these AI courses support the broader shift toward digital and skill-based education across India.
Who Can Enroll?
Enrollment is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students from any academic discipline. Faculty members from higher education institutions are also encouraged to participate. The only requirements are basic digital literacy and a keen interest in learning.
How to Enroll?
Those who are interested can sign up through the SWAYAM Plus portal through this link. While the courses do not demand any prior experience in AI or coding, they are ideal for anyone curious about how AI is transforming various industries and academic fields.
